Recently I have been posting heaps of sweet treats – #pimpingpaleo!  So for the next few postings you are going to see more savoury recipes to balance it all out!  The first hitting the interwebs is…  tada… Primal (cos I’m using dairy) Smoked Salmon & Cream Cheese Blini.  Why blini, beside its history, I think it sounds so much more classy and exotic than piketes, don’t you?

Anyho here we go…

Sometimes you just need a little something under your smoked salmon. So searching the web for a paleo or primal blini/piklete/pancake recipe I found this one at wholesomekids. It was so quick and easy to make, I had them out of the mixing bowl, into the pan and onto the plate in less than 10 minutes.

Perfect for a weekend brunch/lunch or how about making them tiny and cute to taste tempt a party.

I remember back in the old eating days and on my first trip to the USA, San Francisco to be exact, I came across cereal that had huge pieces of dried strawberries (as well as a bucket of sugar). It was so tasty and I’d make sure I got my share of the dried berries.

On further visits I found the best fresh strawberries ever at Berkeley Farmers Market. Plenty of those were eaten however, I still loved those dried strawberries and often thought about them!

And as it just seems to happen sometime, like magic I discovered this post from The Paddington Foodie on how to make oven dried strawberries! I have to share this straight away even though in New Zealand we have a few more months to go before the strawberry season really gets underway.

Can’t wait to dry my own and use them on my Nograinola!

You need to gather together just 500g fresh strawberries & 1 teaspoon sea salt. Then head over to Paddington Foodie for the super easy instructions.

Oven Dried Strawberries

Oven dried strawberries are something I’ve been wanting to try for ages.  This week, almost serendipitously,  the ideal opportunity presented itself with enormous kilo punnets of fragrant, perfectly ripe and  juicy strawberries available at the markets from our Victorian growers. I’ve successfully  dabbled in using my oven to make crisps before. My first foray was into oven baked beetroot crisps, followed by toffee drizzled apple slices, and more recently mandarin which although gorgeous on their own were pounded to a fine dust and incorporated into a spicy salt and sweet citrus sugar. Initially, I will confess, I was a little dubious as to how I would fare oven drying sweet, delicate strawberries. Would they disintegrate into a pulpy, jammy mess or worse lose their lovely vibrancy and crisp to an unappetising muddy colour?

Sometimes it’s best to not over think and complicate things. The best and most efficient…

I love my bacon and eggs in butter fry-up every day, and it really, truly doesn’t take so long to cook. However, even with the best of intentions some mornings can just go wrong all the way.  I say it’s when the Morning Devils come out to play.

You know how it goes – sleep through the alarm, nothing in the wardrobe looks right, poke your finger through your tights and then to add insult to injury you get that kink in your hair cos you’ve over heated it with your straighteners.

Guys – you may not relate to the above but I’m sure there are Morning Devils at your house to. You can guess – cut yourself shaving, bleeds again on your clean shirt, iron a new one only to find a stain on the last bit you are ironing, can’t find your phone/keys/the other shoe, you know stuff like that!

Cut with the ramble and get to the point! Here is something quick for your breakfast. It doesn’t take to long to prepare (well maybe an hour tops!) and keeps for a couple of weeks in an airtight container.

So on those mornings when you need breakfast in a rushola, grab a bowl of Nograinola.  Throw on a blob of Greek yoghurt/cream/almond milk and add a handful of berries or whatever and you’re good to go.
