I always thought that quiche was a dish invented by the French but apparently not.  The Germans have this claim to fame with their kuchen, meaning cake.  A savory egg custard tart which they used brioche rather than the traditional short pastry.

No matter really, as this recipe has it’s origin from a twenty year old Australian Womens Weekly cookbook.  Before the low fat madness hit we could eat cream and cheese without fear.

Fast forward over those two decades when saturated fat was demonised and my favourite quiche was only made occasionally and then eaten with guilt. Well, that has changed now, hasn’t it?

Now the big issue is the pastry and all that wheaty flour.  But with thanks to Everyday Mavens paleo pastry and the addition of oregano a perfect tart based was found. So if you tolerate dairy then this lovely quiche is perfectly yummy eaten hot or cold. Without grains, without gluten and without guilt!

I’m sharing this recipe on Gluten Free Wednesdays and Gluten Free Fridays, two great recipe roundups. If you love this then make sure you sign-up so you receive each new recipe hot off the press!

One of my favourite summer tarts of all times is Strawberry Custard tart.  I used to enjoy these in the old days; short sweet pastry, sweet custard and sweet strawberries – ahh, there seems to be a similar theme happening here!

Now that I don’t eat or cook with grains or refined sugar I have been thinking about how to repurpose these not so nice ingredients to make a healthy  treat for the holiday season.

Well, with a few tweaks to a paleo pastry recipe and some friendly changes to the basic Creme Patisserie recipe my tart desire has been satisfied.

As well, I have a whole family of converts to this tasty dessert as the first tart disappeared in a twink.  The second tart made for Christmas day only lasted a bit longer because my son had created his take on the Mixed Berry Cheesecake, so we had two desserts!

I hope you will give this a try and you don’t need to wait for summer. If fresh berries are out of season then use frozen berries.

Creamy, scrumptious Sweet Potato Dauphinoise, such dreamy comfort food is a perfect side dish anytime.

The original recipe uses potatoes but my take is to use sweet potatoes, or kumara, as we call them downunder.  Personally I just prefer the taste and I think it makes the dish more creamier. Regardless, if potatoes are on your primal/paleo menu use them if you prefer or even mix the two.

The dish has a disturbing history, involving song birds eaten whole.  However, I am recommending this to be served with a simple meat dish such as lamb cutlets or a perfectly cooked steak instead!  Add some broccoli, steamed and with a smattering of freshly ground nutmeg.

This is one of those dishes that improve their flavour as time goes on.  So if you have any leftover they are totally delicious fried up for breakfast the next day with bacon and eggs!
